The barrel has been invented by the Gauls around the 5th century to replace the earthenware amphoras formerly used for containing and transporting the wine. It is hard to imagine how difficult it is to put together the staves and heads which make up the barrel, to get a both sturdy and tight container.

Robinson Crusoe who had succeeded in building his house and furniture , failed to make a barrel, according to the account of his adventures !
